1600 ST Coupe 2T-U (TA40 JP)

A40 · 1977–1981RWD

The 1600 ST coupe introduced the second-generation A40 styling to Japan in 1977 and stayed on sale until 1981. Its 2T-U 1.6-litre four-cylinder drove the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. A single-cam engine kept it at the modest end of the range, below the GT liftbacks.

STORY

The Celica was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1970, alongside the Carina, and went on sale in Japan that December. The name comes from the Latin coelica, meaning heavenly. The first generation, coded A20 and A30, offered 1.4 to 2.2 litre engines, including the twin-cam 1.6 litre 2T-G. The all-wheel-drive GT-Four arrived in Japan in October 1986 on the ST165, and the line moved through seven generations to the T230 of 1999. The last Celica was built on 21 April 2006.
