2.2 20R Coupe (US)

A40 · 1978–1980RWD

Offered in the US from 1978 to 1980, this second-generation Celica coupe used the 2.2-litre 20R four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. The engine was shared with the GT Liftback, so the choice between them came down to body style, and this was the notchback.

STORY

The Celica was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1970, alongside the Carina, and went on sale in Japan that December. The name comes from the Latin coelica, meaning heavenly. The first generation, coded A20 and A30, offered 1.4 to 2.2 litre engines, including the twin-cam 1.6 litre 2T-G. The all-wheel-drive GT-Four arrived in Japan in October 1986 on the ST165, and the line moved through seven generations to the T230 of 1999. The last Celica was built on 21 April 2006.
