2.2 20R GT Liftback (US)

A40 · 1978–1980RWD

The US GT Liftback of 1978 to 1980 was the hatchback version of the second-generation Celica. A 2.2-litre 20R four-cylinder drove the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. It shared its engine with the coupe, and the liftback body gave it the larger opening at the rear.

STORY

The Celica was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1970, alongside the Carina, and went on sale in Japan that December. The name comes from the Latin coelica, meaning heavenly. The first generation, coded A20 and A30, offered 1.4 to 2.2 litre engines, including the twin-cam 1.6 litre 2T-G. The all-wheel-drive GT-Four arrived in Japan in October 1986 on the ST165, and the line moved through seven generations to the T230 of 1999. The last Celica was built on 21 April 2006.
