XF20 · 1994–1997RWD

This entry covers the A, B and C types of the second-generation Celsior sold in Japan from 1994 to 1997. The 4.0-litre V8 sent power to the rear wheels through an automatic gearbox. A mid-1997 revision changed the engine, so this row is the original version.

STORY

The flagship sold abroad as the Lexus LS was badged Toyota Celsior at home, which Toyota described as the top-grade sedan for private buyers in Japan. UCF10 and UCF11 reached Toyota Store and Toyopet Store showrooms on 9 October 1989, built at Tahara around a 3,968 cc 1UZ-FE V8 of 260 PS, with double wishbones all round and air springs on the top C grade, and the car took the Japan Car of the Year award for 1989 to 1990. UCF20 followed on 11 October 1994 with a 35 mm longer wheelbase and 265 PS, and a heavy revision in July 1997 brought VVT-i, 280 PS and a five-speed automatic. UCF30 arrived on 31 August 2000 with a 4,292 cc 3UZ-FE and a 0.25 drag coefficient. Lexus opened its own Japanese showrooms in August 2005, and the Celsior was dropped in 2006.
