The Story

Why the Corolla Fielder Hybrid matters

The Fielder name arrived on 28 August 2000, when Toyota swapped the van-derived Corolla wagon for a passenger estate built on the Corolla sedan platform, and the third series, E160, was launched on 11 May 2012 on the smaller Vitz-class platform at the Miyagi plant of Central Motor, a company folded into Toyota Motor East Japan that July. Toyota added hybrids to the Axio sedan and the Fielder estate together on 6 August 2013: a 1.5-litre 1NZ-FXE with Toyota Hybrid System II and a reduction gear, the battery set under the rear seat, 33.0 km/L on the JC08 cycle, prices from 2,085,000 yen and a target of 1,500 Fielders a month through Toyota Corolla dealers. The E160 Axio and Fielder stayed in the Japanese price list long after the rest of the Corolla line had moved on, into 2025.
