Toyota introduced the Corolla FX in 1984 as the front-drive E80 hatchback, sold in Japan alongside the sedan and coupe. The FX GT, launched at the same time, used the 1.6 litre 4A-GE twin-cam, an engine developed with Yamaha, and was the sporty variant. The E90 generation continued the FX from 1987 to 1992, with 1.3 and 1.5 litre engines, and the 4A-GE rating rising from 120 PS to 140 PS in later cars. The lower-powered FX models were economical hatches, while the GT versions became popular with enthusiasts.
