The Corolla II appeared in 1982 together with the second-generation Tercel. It was a Japan-only badge for the same car, sold through Corolla Stores while the Corsa was sold through Toyopet Stores. The Corolla II was mostly a hatchback, with three and five-door bodies in its second generation. It used front-engine, front-wheel drive, and four-wheel-drive hatchbacks such as the EL45 and EL55 were offered in later generations. Engines were shared with the Tercel. The fourth and fifth generations included the 1.3-litre 4E-FE and 1.5-litre 5E-FE petrol engines, plus a 1.5-litre 1N-T diesel on some trims. All five generations of the Tercel family were built at Toyota's Takaoka plant. Japanese production of the Tercel, Corsa and Corolla II ended in July 1999, after about 4.97 million units. The Toyota Duet is listed as the Corolla II successor in Japan.
The Corolla II is the Japanese-market twin of the second-generation Toyota Tercel, a compact front-wheel-drive hatchback. It was sold through Corolla Stores in three and five-door forms, with four-wheel drive offered on some later versions.
