Toyota launched the Comfort on 19 December 1995 as a replacement for the base fleet versions of the Mark II and the larger Crown. It was derived from the Mark II (X80) and aimed at fleet buyers. The long-wheelbase version was sold as the Crown Comfort and became a common taxi in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. The short-wheelbase Comfort was used mostly for driver's education in Japan. Engines changed over the years and included the 4S-FE, 3S-FE, 1G-FE and 1TR-FE petrol units, LPG versions, and 2L-II, 2L-TE and 5L diesels. A mild hybrid version, the GBS12, was sold from 2002 to 2008. Special versions included Welcab paratransit cars with a rotating rear seat. Toyota reported about 364,000 sold by 2011. Production ended in January 2018 after more than 22 years. The Toyota JPN Taxi, shown at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, took over taxi duty, and the Corolla took over driver's education work.
The Crown Comfort is a long-wheelbase sedan Toyota built mainly for taxi operators. It is a plain, durable four-door with rear-wheel drive, offered with petrol, LPG and diesel engines. A shorter Comfort version served Japanese driving schools.
