Diesel 1500 (C)

RS · 1955–1962RWD

Introduced in October 1959, the Crown Diesel was Japan's first diesel passenger car. It used a small C-series four-cylinder diesel of about 1.5 litres, with a manual gearbox and rear drive, in the same sedan body as the petrol RS Crown. Cheap running costs suited taxi work, the market the Crown was largely built for.

STORY

The Toyopet Crown entered the Japanese market in January 1955. In 1964 the Crown Eight arrived with a 2.6-litre V8, and the Century, which went into production in 1967, was built on that V8 lineage. In July 2022 Toyota unveiled a new Crown family in four body styles, Crossover, Sport, Sedan and Estate, with the Crossover going on sale first, on 1 September 2022. The catalog files the Crown Eight, the S-series cars and the Sport under this one name, although they are very different machines.
