STORY
Toyota launched the Cynos on 21 January 1991 as the coupe of the Tercel, Corsa and Corolla II family, sharing their platform, engines and gearboxes and built alongside them at Takaoka. The 1,496 cc twin cam gave 105 PS net, or 115 PS in the beta version with its variable intake manifold, through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. In the United States the same car was sold as the Paseo. The L50 body followed on 6 September 1995, adding a cheaper 1.3-litre EL52 beside the 1.5-litre EL54, and in October 1996 a convertible joined it: reinforced shells were shipped to American Sunroof Corporation in the United States for conversion and returned to Japan. Toyopet Store sold it alongside Toyota Corolla Store, and Toyota Vista Store from the second body on, until the line ended in July 1999.
