The Echo reached North America in late 1999 as a 2000 model, the US counterpart of the small Toyota family that Japan knew as the Vitz hatchback and Platz sedan. It was sold as a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe with a 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine rated at 108 hp, driving the front wheels through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. Toyota positioned it below the Corolla as the least expensive car in its US range. Production ended after the 2005 model year, and the Echo was replaced for 2006 by the Yaris, which took over the entry role in the lineup.
A subcompact car sold in North America for 2000 to 2005, available as a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe. A 1.5 litre four, front-wheel drive and a tall, narrow body made it Toyota's low-cost entry model of the period.
