The Estima Emina launched on 13 January 1992 together with the Estima Lucida, as a smaller variant of the first-generation Estima. Each was about 110 mm narrower and 70 mm shorter than the standard wide-body Estima. Japanese vehicle tax depends on a car's length multiplied by its width, so the smaller size placed the cars in a lower tax band. The Emina was sold only through Toyota Store dealerships, while the Lucida was sold through Toyota Corolla Store dealerships. Both could be ordered with the 2.2-litre 3C-T and 3C-TE turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines. They received a minor facelift in 1995 and another in 1996. The standard wide-body Estima continued alongside them. The first-generation Estima line ended in December 1999, and outside the United States it was replaced by the second generation in January 2000.
