STORY

The Frontlander is a compact crossover made for the Chinese market, and the venture behind it matters: Toyota lists it, hybrid included, among the products of GAC Toyota Motor in Guangzhou, which has been building cars since May 2006. The other Chinese venture, FAW Toyota, sells the mechanical twin as the Corolla Cross with the car's international styling, while the Frontlander carries the front and rear of the Japanese-market car, which is why China has two versions of one design. The Frontlander was shown at the Guangzhou motor show on 19 November 2021 and went on sale on 6 January 2022, built on the TNGA-C platform with a 2.0-litre Dynamic Force four of 126 kW and a Direct Shift-CVT. A reworked car with a new face and larger screens followed on 23 September 2025.
