88C-V · 1988–1988RWD

The car that introduced Toyota's new R32V twin-turbo V8, the V-suffix marking the switch from the four-cylinder to eight cylinders. It debuted at the 1988 Fuji 500 Miles but suffered mechanical trouble, and at the WSPC Fuji 1000km both entries finished only as the last classified cars, serving as the proving ground for the successful 89C-V that followed.

STORY

Toyota's Group C program spanned the 1980s and early 1990s sports-prototype era, developing the C-V series of turbocharged endurance racers with Tom's and later TMG. The cars competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the World and Japanese sportscar championships, chasing Toyota's first overall Le Mans win. The effort culminated in the 3.5-litre TS010 before the category's demise.
