GT-One TS020 (1998)

TS020 GT1 spec (1998) · 1998–1998RWD

Built by Toyota Team Europe (TMG) in Cologne under designer Andre de Cortanze, the GT-One debuted at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans homologated to the FIA Group GT1 rules, the road-car requirement satisfied by a pair of street-legal examples. Powered by an in-house carbon-fibre monocoque and a twin-turbo 3.6L R36V V8 derived from Toyota's Group C engines, the three cars qualified 2nd, 5th and 8th and ran 1-2 at the front, but transmission failures and an accident sidelined two; the surviving Japanese-crewed car (Katayama/Suzuki/Tsuchiya) finished 9th overall.

STORY

The Toyota GT-One (TS020) was a purpose-built endurance racer created for the late-1990s GT1 era at Le Mans. Developed by Toyota Team Europe, it was famously homologated via a single road-legal example exploiting the regulations. It came agonizingly close to winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998 and 1999 before mechanical trouble and misfortune intervened.
