GT-One TS020 (1999)

TS020 LMGTP spec (1999) · 1999–1999RWD

For 1999 the GT-One was reclassified as an LMGTP (Le Mans GT Prototype) after the rulebook shifted, freeing Toyota from the road-car homologation pretence, and the bodywork was revised with added front-fender venting and deleted rear-fender louvres. Three cars ran at the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans against the Mercedes CLR, BMW V12 LMR and Audi R8R; after two retirements the Japanese-crewed #3 of Katayama/Tsuchiya/Suzuki finished 2nd overall, one lap behind the winning BMW, Toyota's best Le Mans result to that point. The program ended afterward as Toyota redirected resources toward its Formula One entry.

STORY

The Toyota GT-One (TS020) was a purpose-built endurance racer created for the late-1990s GT1 era at Le Mans. Developed by Toyota Team Europe, it was famously homologated via a single road-legal example exploiting the regulations. It came agonizingly close to winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998 and 1999 before mechanical trouble and misfortune intervened.
