STORY

Toyota launched the Hiace Regius in April 1997 as a passenger-only sibling of the Granvia, using the same semi-bonneted XH10 underpinnings. It was renamed simply Regius in August 1999 and sold until May 2002. The range included petrol and diesel engines with rear or four-wheel drive and automatic transmissions, topped by the 3.0-litre 1KZ-TE turbodiesel, which gained an intercooler in 1999. The Regius Ace appeared in 1999 as a rebadged H100 Hiace van and ran to 2004, and a second generation based on the H200 followed. The two names are easy to confuse because they sat on different bases.
