STORY

Toyota's Highlander hybrid was shown as a world premiere at the Detroit show in January 2004 and went on sale in mid-2005 as a 2006 model; Toyota described it as the world's first seven-passenger hybrid SUV. The third generation made its world debut at the New York show on 27 March 2013 and was built in Princeton, Indiana. The fourth generation followed in New York on 17 April 2019, offered with a V6 or a hybrid of a 2.5-litre four and two electric motors. The next Highlander is a battery-electric three-row SUV with a 77.0 or 95.8 kWh battery and up to 315 miles of manufacturer-estimated range, built in Georgetown, Kentucky; Toyota now calls it the 2028 model and expects sales to begin in early 2027.
