Hilux Overdrive T1 (2012)

Overdrive/Imperial V8 (2012-2015) · 2012–20154WD

Toyota's Dakar effort began in 2012 as a privateer program run by Belgium's Overdrive Racing and Imperial Toyota of South Africa, using a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 four-wheel-drive Hilux built to FIA T1 rules. Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz finished 3rd overall on debut in 2012, then improved to 2nd overall in 2013, establishing the Hilux as a genuine Dakar contender against the dominant Mini/X-Raid buggies.

STORY

The Hilux Dakar is the rally-raid racing version of Toyota's pickup, campaigned in the Dakar Rally by Toyota Gazoo Racing and partners such as Hallspeed/Overdrive. Progressively developed from V8-powered two-wheel-drive machines to T1+ four-wheel-drive designs, it delivered Toyota's first outright Dakar victory in 2019 with Nasser Al-Attiyah. It remains a front-running contender in the cross-country world.
