N30 · 1978–1983RWD

Japanese buyers could take the N30 Hilux with the 1.6 litre 12R petrol engine from 1978 until the generation ended in 1983. It was rear-wheel drive with a manual gearbox. The 12R was carried over from the N20 pickup, and in this body it served as the small-engine work truck for light commercial use.

STORY

The Hilux went on sale in Japan on 21 March 1968 as the RN10. Later generations were introduced in September 1978, September 1988 and September 1997, and the seventh, the Hilux Vigo, began production and launch in Thailand in August 2004. The eighth generation had its world premiere in Thailand in May 2015. Toyota unveiled the ninth generation in November 2025, a little over ten years later, with a dual-motor battery-electric version and a mild-hybrid 2.8-litre diesel among its powertrains.
