N30 2.2 20R (North America)

N30 · 1978–1980RWD

North American N30 Hilux pickups with the 2.2 litre 20R four-cylinder petrol engine were sold from 1978 to 1980. Drive went to the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. The 20R had already been used in the N20 range from 1975, and Toyota added four-wheel drive to the Hilux line in January 1979, so a two-wheel-drive truck like this one is the plainer choice.

STORY

The Hilux went on sale in Japan on 21 March 1968 as the RN10. Later generations were introduced in September 1978, September 1988 and September 1997, and the seventh, the Hilux Vigo, began production and launch in Thailand in August 2004. The eighth generation had its world premiere in Thailand in May 2015. Toyota unveiled the ninth generation in November 2025, a little over ten years later, with a dual-motor battery-electric version and a mild-hybrid 2.8-litre diesel among its powertrains.
