N50 2.4 22R-E (North America)

N50 · 1984–1988RWD

The 2.4 litre 22R-E was the fuel-injected four-cylinder petrol engine in the North American N50 Hilux, sold from 1984 to 1988. Rear-wheel drive and a manual gearbox came with it. It added fuel injection to the earlier 2.4 litre 22R in the same generation, which used a carburettor.

STORY

The Hilux went on sale in Japan on 21 March 1968 as the RN10. Later generations were introduced in September 1978, September 1988 and September 1997, and the seventh, the Hilux Vigo, began production and launch in Thailand in August 2004. The eighth generation had its world premiere in Thailand in May 2015. Toyota unveiled the ninth generation in November 2025, a little over ten years later, with a dual-motor battery-electric version and a mild-hybrid 2.8-litre diesel among its powertrains.
