STORY

Released on 28 September 2004 for Japan only, the Isis took over from the Gaia with an unusual door design: the centre pillar on the kerb side was built into the front and rear doors, so opening both left-hand doors left a 1,890 mm wide opening. Toyota Store sold it, Kanto Auto Works assembled it at Higashifuji, and buyers chose between a 1,998 cc direct-injection 1AZ-FSE of 114 kW (155 PS) net with Super CVT-i and a 1,794 cc 1ZZ-FE of 132 PS with the four-speed Super ECT, while the sporting Platana used a seven-step sequential shift. A clearance sonar that read the steering angle, which Toyota described as a world first, was optional. Valvematic engines arrived in September 2009 to cut fuel use, and sales ended in December 2017 with no direct successor.
