STORY

The ist arrived on 8 May 2002 as the sixth model spun off the Vitz, a compact with SUV-style trim, 15-inch wheels and flared arches, sold through Toyopet Store and Netz. The same NCP61 car opened the Scion brand in California in June 2003 as the xA, went nationwide in the United States the following year, and importation ended in December 2006. The second ist, launched 30 July 2007, used the new Vitz platform but widened to 1,725 mm on 16-inch wheels, offering a 1,797 cc 2ZR-FE of 132 PS or a 1,496 cc 1NZ-FE of 109 PS, four-wheel drive with active torque control, and six airbags as standard; Kanto Auto Works built it at Iwate. That car was sold as the Scion xD in North America and the Urban Cruiser in Europe, and the 1.8-litre engine was dropped in August 2010.
