The Story

Why the Land Cruiser Prado matters

Toyota introduced the Prado in Japan in 1990, building it on the short-wheelbase 70-series that had earlier been sold as the Land Cruiser II. It was meant to sit below the heavy-duty Land Cruiser, with a more comfortable ride and everyday usability. The 1996 J90 brought independent front suspension, a V6 petrol engine and diesel options, and became a global export success. The J120 followed in 2002, adding a longer body, a stronger frame and a V6 and turbodiesel line-up, and spawned the Lexus GX 470 in North America. The J150 arrived in 2009 and stayed on sale until 2023, gaining a four-cylinder turbodiesel and a luxury twin in the Lexus GX 460. Its successor, the J250, was revealed in 2023 on the GA-F platform shared with the Land Cruiser 300. It is sold as Land Cruiser in Europe, North America and Israel, as Land Cruiser 250 in Japan and as Land Cruiser Prado in Australia and China, and is listed under Land Cruiser here.
