FJ40 3.9 F (1960-1975)

FJ40 · 1960–19754WD

FJ40 Land Cruiser, a short-wheelbase two-door SUV sold in Japan from 1960 to 1975. It uses the 3.9 litre F six-cylinder petrol engine with four-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. It came as a soft top or hardtop, and the page says this series added a two-speed transfer case that earlier models lacked. The F engine was replaced by the 4.2 litre 2F in 1975, which ends this version.

STORY

The Land Cruiser began as a Jeep-type utility vehicle: Toyota finished its Jeep-type prototype in January 1951, and the production truck was sold as the Toyota Jeep BJ. In 1954 the name changed to Land Cruiser, partly because Willys held the Jeep trademark. The 70 series, introduced in 1984 as the successor to the long-serving 40 series, came in heavy-duty and light-duty forms. The catalog groups many generations under this one name, from the BJ and 20 series to the J250 and J300, and they cover different body styles and markets.
