The Matrix, officially the Corolla Matrix, was Toyota's North American sport wagon. Toyota's chronology puts the start of production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario, in January 2002, with first sales that February. The US regulator's own model lists carry no 2002 Corolla Matrix, only 2003 onward, so the calendar start and the first model year differ by a year. Its twin came off a different line altogether, the Pontiac Vibe at NUMMI in Fremont, where the Japan-market Voltz followed in June 2002. The E130 ran the 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE, with the high-revving 2ZZ-GE reserved for the XRS and all-wheel drive offered from 2003 to 2006. The E140 was shown at SEMA on 31 October 2007 and reached dealers in February 2008 as a 2009 model, with a 2ZR-FE or a 2.4-litre 2AZ-FE. US sales stopped after 2013, Canadian sales after 2014.
North American five-door hatch/crossover of 2002 to 2014 developed with GM (Pontiac Vibe twin) on the Corolla platform, with the 2ZZ-GE XRS.
