STORY

Toyota began selling the first Mirai in Japan on 15 December 2014 for 7,236,000 yen with tax, or about 5.2 million yen after a national subsidy of up to 2.02 million yen. The second generation was previewed as a concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show and went on sale in Japan in December 2020. It moved to a rear-wheel-drive platform and stores 5.6 kg of hydrogen in three tanks, about 30 percent more range than before. In August 2021 a 2021 Mirai drove 1,360 km on one five-minute fill of 5.65 kg, using hypermiling techniques, and earned a Guinness World Records title.
