W10 (AW11) · 1985–1989RWD

For American buyers, the 1.6 4A-GE was the standard AW11 MR2, offered from 1985 to 1989. The twin-cam 1.6-litre four sits behind the seats with a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. Until the supercharged 4A-GZE joined it for 1988, this naturally aspirated engine was the only choice in the United States.

STORY

Toyota began building the mid-engined, rear-drive MR2 in June 1984. The AW11 used a transverse 1.6 litre 4A-GE, rated at 130 PS gross in Japan against 112 hp (SAE net) in the US, and a supercharged 4A-GZE was added in Japan in 1986. The SW20 of 1989 took a 2.0 litre 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE, which made 245 PS in Japan from late 1993. The W30, sold in Japan as the MR-S, was built from October 1999 and ended in July 2007.
