1500 S 3A-LU manual (AW10 JP)

W10 (AW11) · 1984–1989RWD

The manual 1500 S is the plainest Japanese MR2 of the first generation, on sale from 1984 to 1989. A 1.5-litre 3A-LU four rated at 83 PS sits behind the seats and drives the rear wheels. Output is well below the twin-cam 1600 G, so the appeal is the light mid-engine chassis rather than speed.

STORY

Toyota began building the mid-engined, rear-drive MR2 in June 1984. The AW11 used a transverse 1.6 litre 4A-GE, rated at 130 PS gross in Japan against 112 hp (SAE net) in the US, and a supercharged 4A-GZE was added in Japan in 1986. The SW20 of 1989 took a 2.0 litre 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE, which made 245 PS in Japan from late 1993. The W30, sold in Japan as the MR-S, was built from October 1999 and ended in July 2007.
