1600 G 4A-GELU automatic (AW11 JP)

W10 (AW11) · 1984–1987RWD

The Japanese automatic AW11 1600 G pairs the 4A-GELU twin-cam 1.6-litre four, rated at 130 PS and 149 Nm, with a self-shifting gearbox behind the seats. Sold from 1984 to 1987, it drives the rear wheels. It suits buyers who wanted the mid-engine layout without a clutch pedal, and it has more urgency than the smaller 1.5-litre S.

STORY

Toyota began building the mid-engined, rear-drive MR2 in June 1984. The AW11 used a transverse 1.6 litre 4A-GE, rated at 130 PS gross in Japan against 112 hp (SAE net) in the US, and a supercharged 4A-GZE was added in Japan in 1986. The SW20 of 1989 took a 2.0 litre 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE, which made 245 PS in Japan from late 1993. The W30, sold in Japan as the MR-S, was built from October 1999 and ended in July 2007.
