The GT with the 3S-GTE was the turbocharged SW20 MR2 in Japan, sold as a coupe from 1989 to 1991. Its 2.0-litre turbo four produces 304 Nm and is paired with a manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It is the performance model above the naturally aspirated G and G-Limited, which use the 3S-GE.

STORY

Toyota began building the mid-engined, rear-drive MR2 in June 1984. The AW11 used a transverse 1.6 litre 4A-GE, rated at 130 PS gross in Japan against 112 hp (SAE net) in the US, and a supercharged 4A-GZE was added in Japan in 1986. The SW20 of 1989 took a 2.0 litre 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE, which made 245 PS in Japan from late 1993. The W30, sold in Japan as the MR-S, was built from October 1999 and ended in July 2007.
