GT-S 3S-GTE T-bar (SW20 JP)

W20 (SW20) · 1991–1994RWD

The GT-S with the 3S-GTE and T-bar roof was the top Japanese SW20 MR2 from 1991 to 1994. The turbocharged 2.0-litre four makes 245 PS and 304 Nm and drives the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. Its removable roof panels and higher output separate it from the earlier GT coupe.

STORY

Toyota began building the mid-engined, rear-drive MR2 in June 1984. The AW11 used a transverse 1.6 litre 4A-GE, rated at 130 PS gross in Japan against 112 hp (SAE net) in the US, and a supercharged 4A-GZE was added in Japan in 1986. The SW20 of 1989 took a 2.0 litre 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE, which made 245 PS in Japan from late 1993. The W30, sold in Japan as the MR-S, was built from October 1999 and ended in July 2007.
