W20 (SW20) · 1990–1995RWD

The US MR2 with the 2.2-litre 5S-FE four and an automatic gearbox was the relaxed version of the second-generation car, catalogued here as 1990 to 1995. The engine sits behind the seats and drives the rear wheels. Its displacement is larger than the 2.0-litre engines sold in Japan, but it is a naturally aspirated, non-turbo car.

STORY

Toyota began building the mid-engined, rear-drive MR2 in June 1984. The AW11 used a transverse 1.6 litre 4A-GE, rated at 130 PS gross in Japan against 112 hp (SAE net) in the US, and a supercharged 4A-GZE was added in Japan in 1986. The SW20 of 1989 took a 2.0 litre 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE, which made 245 PS in Japan from late 1993. The W30, sold in Japan as the MR-S, was built from October 1999 and ended in July 2007.
