G Rev 5 3S-GE (SW20 JP)

W20 (SW20) · 1997–1999RWD

The G Rev 5 is a late Japanese SW20 coupe, sold from 1997 to 1999 with a manual gearbox. Its naturally aspirated 2.0-litre 3S-GE four makes 200 PS and 206 Nm and drives the rear wheels. Variable valve timing lifts output well above the 165 PS of the early naturally aspirated G, making it the sharpest non-turbo SW20.

STORY

Toyota began building the mid-engined, rear-drive MR2 in June 1984. The AW11 used a transverse 1.6 litre 4A-GE, rated at 130 PS gross in Japan against 112 hp (SAE net) in the US, and a supercharged 4A-GZE was added in Japan in 1986. The SW20 of 1989 took a 2.0 litre 3S-GE or turbocharged 3S-GTE, which made 245 PS in Japan from late 1993. The W30, sold in Japan as the MR-S, was built from October 1999 and ended in July 2007.
