STORY
The Opa appeared as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show of October 1999 and went on sale on 24 May 2000 through Toyopet Store, a tall five-door hatchback on the fifth-generation Vista platform built at Tsutsumi. At 4,250 mm it was about 400 mm shorter than the Vista, and its 1,525 mm height let it into mechanical car parks limited to 1,600 mm. The first cars used the 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE, 136 PS with front-wheel drive and 125 PS with four-wheel drive, on a four-speed Super ECT automatic. August 2000 added the 2.0-litre D-4 1AZ-FSE of 152 PS with a Super CVT, which Toyota records as the first continuously variable transmission in one of its passenger cars. A facelift followed in June 2002, and the Opa was dropped in 2005 after one generation, with nothing put in its place.
