The Story

Why the Origin matters

Toyota launched the Origin in November 2000 as a limited-edition mid-size sedan for Japan. The plan was for 1,000 cars, and about 1,073 were built, with production running from May 2000 to April 2001. The body was modeled on the RS series Toyopet Crown and the car used the same platform as the Progres. Its retro design included rear suicide doors, a rearward-slanting C-pillar and jewel-style tail lamps. Power came from a 3.0-litre 2JZ-GE inline-six petrol engine with a four-speed automatic transmission, driving the rear wheels. It was not based on the Crown Comfort. The Origin was a one-time special edition rather than a regular model, and it was discontinued in 2001 once the planned run was sold.
