STORY
Paseo was the export name of the coupe Toyota sold at home as the Cynos, and Toyota's own history page says so outright: the Cynos was marketed in the United States as the Paseo. The car arrived on 21 January 1991, built at Takaoka on the running gear of the Tercel, Corsa and Corolla II, and NHTSA's files show the American version starting as a 1992 model. Paseo was also the name in Canada, Europe and Australia. The EL44 used the 1.5-litre 5E-FE, quoted at 105 PS in Japan, with a variable-intake 5E-FHE of 115 PS above it. The EL54 followed in September 1995 and reached American showrooms for 1996, and from October 1996 reinforced shells went to American Sunroof Corporation to be cut into convertibles and shipped back. US sales ended after the 1997 model year, and production stopped in July 1999.
