XP10 · 2001–2005FWD

The late 1.0 1SZ-FE covers the 2001 to 2005 run of the entry Platz sedan in Japan, a front-drive four-door. The 1.0-litre petrol four still makes 70 PS but with 93 Nm, and it uses an automatic gearbox. It remains the cheapest way into the Platz, with only a small torque change from the early car.

STORY

The Platz was launched in Japan in August 1999 as a small, practical sedan related to the Vitz. Its XP10 body came with a 1.0-litre 1SZ-FE, a 1.3-litre 2NZ-FE or a 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE petrol four, with manual or automatic gearboxes, and four-wheel drive was offered on the 1.3. Overseas the car was sold as the Echo in North America, where a two-door body was also offered, and as the Yaris sedan in other markets. In China it was sold as the Xiali, and the Vela version ran until 2012. Toyota replaced the Platz in Japan with the Belta in November 2005.
