XW60 · 2023–presentFWD

The 2023 Prius Prime in SE, XSE and XSE Premium trims is the American fifth-generation plug-in, sold since 2023. Its 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid system makes 220 hp combined, and the 188 Nm (139 lb-ft) listed here is the torque of its 2.0-litre petrol engine alone, because Toyota does not publish a combined system torque. It has an automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. A 13.6 kWh battery supports longer electric driving than the earlier Prime.

STORY

The first Prius Plug-in went on sale in Japan in January 2012 and in the United States in February 2012, with a 4.4 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 1.8-litre petrol-electric system producing 134 hp. The second generation arrived in 2017 with an 8.8 kWh battery. It was named Prius Prime in the United States and Prius PHV in Japan, where a GR Sport version went on sale in September 2017. The third generation, unveiled in November 2022 at the LA Auto Show, uses the 2.0-litre M20A-FXS engine and a 13.6 kWh battery. In Europe the plug-in is the only fifth-generation Prius offered. For the 2025 model year the American car was renamed Prius Plug-in Hybrid.
