ZVW35 · 2012–2015FWD

The 2012 Plug-in was the first Prius that could charge from a socket, sold in the United States from 2012 to 2015. Its 1.8-litre petrol-electric system produces 134 hp and 142 Nm, and a 4.4 kWh lithium-ion battery gives a short electric-only range. Front-wheel drive is standard. The larger battery is what separates it from the regular Prius.

STORY

The first Prius Plug-in went on sale in Japan in January 2012 and in the United States in February 2012, with a 4.4 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 1.8-litre petrol-electric system producing 134 hp. The second generation arrived in 2017 with an 8.8 kWh battery. It was named Prius Prime in the United States and Prius PHV in Japan, where a GR Sport version went on sale in September 2017. The third generation, unveiled in November 2022 at the LA Auto Show, uses the 2.0-litre M20A-FXS engine and a 13.6 kWh battery. In Europe the plug-in is the only fifth-generation Prius offered. For the 2025 model year the American car was renamed Prius Plug-in Hybrid.
