STORY

Toyota launched the first Prius in Japan in 1997 and calls it the world's first mass-produced hybrid passenger car; sales began on 10 December 1997. It rated 28.0 km/L on the Japanese 10-15 cycle and used a 1.5-litre engine of 58 hp with a 40 hp motor. A revised NHW11 reached other markets from 2000, Europe from September 2000. The XW20 of 2003 used a 1.31 kWh battery, the XW30 followed in 2009 with a 1.8-litre engine, and the XW50 of 2015 was the first Prius on the TNGA platform. The XW60 was presented on 16 November 2022, and Japanese sales began on 10 January 2023.
