XA10 2.0 5-door FWD

XA10 · 1994–2000FWD

The XA10 2.0 5-door was the Japanese long-body RAV4, the car that began the compact SUV class in the 1990s. A 2.0 litre 3S-FE petrol engine feeds the front wheels through a manual gearbox. Choosing front-wheel drive made it lighter and cheaper than the 4WD RAV4, aimed at city drivers.

STORY

The RAV4 grew out of the RAV-FOUR concept shown at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show and was revealed at Geneva in March 1994, with Japanese sales starting in May 1994. It was a compact all-wheel-drive SUV on a monocoque body, built with Corolla platform parts, and a battery-electric RAV4 EV followed in 1997. The first full hybrid arrived in 2016 on the fourth generation, which was shown in Los Angeles in November 2012. The fifth generation reached Europe in 2019 on Toyota's New Global Architecture platform, and cumulative sales passed 10 million by the end of February 2020.
