XA20 1.8 VVT-i 2WD

XA20 · 2000–2005FWD

The XA20 1.8 VVT-i was the entry petrol RAV4 in Europe from 2000 to 2005, a front-drive car with a 125 PS 1.8 litre engine and a manual gearbox. Without the four-wheel-drive hardware, it was lighter than the 2.0 litre models. It suited drivers who chose the RAV4 for its raised seating rather than off-road ability.

STORY

The RAV4 grew out of the RAV-FOUR concept shown at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show and was revealed at Geneva in March 1994, with Japanese sales starting in May 1994. It was a compact all-wheel-drive SUV on a monocoque body, built with Corolla platform parts, and a battery-electric RAV4 EV followed in 1997. The first full hybrid arrived in 2016 on the fourth generation, which was shown in Los Angeles in November 2012. The fifth generation reached Europe in 2019 on Toyota's New Global Architecture platform, and cumulative sales passed 10 million by the end of February 2020.
