The US RAV4 changed engines during the second generation. This version has the 2.4 litre petrol four-cylinder, introduced for the 2004 model year, sold through 2005 and rated at 161 hp, 13 hp more than the 2.0 litre it replaced. Four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox were fitted, making it the strongest RAV4 of its time.

STORY

The RAV4 grew out of the RAV-FOUR concept shown at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show and was revealed at Geneva in March 1994, with Japanese sales starting in May 1994. It was a compact all-wheel-drive SUV on a monocoque body, built with Corolla platform parts, and a battery-electric RAV4 EV followed in 1997. The first full hybrid arrived in 2016 on the fourth generation, which was shown in Los Angeles in November 2012. The fifth generation reached Europe in 2019 on Toyota's New Global Architecture platform, and cumulative sales passed 10 million by the end of February 2020.
