STORY

Toyota's first personal luxury coupe went on sale on 27 February 1981, built at Tahara with a 1G-EU of 125 PS or a 5M-GEU that the factory put at a gross 170 PS, then the highest rating in Japan, and it took Car of the Year Japan for 1981 and 1982. A 190 PS version followed in January 1985. The Z20 of 21 January 1986 added the Aerocabin in April 1989, 500 cars with an electrically folding metal roof and two seats. The Z30 of May 1991 grew into the car sold abroad as the Lexus SC, and the Z40 of April 2001 was a folding hardtop convertible. Japanese registrations of that last Soarer came to 6,486 cars, and in August 2005 the name gave way to Lexus SC when Toyota opened the Lexus channel at home.
