Toyota Thailand introduced the Soluna in August 1996 as a budget sedan for South-East Asia, built on the platform of the Tercel L50. It was sold in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia with the 1.5 litre 5A-FE petrol engine, front-wheel drive and a choice of four-speed automatic or five-speed manual gearbox. Grades included XLi, GLi and SLi, and in Indonesia the SEi. A facelift followed in Thailand at the end of 1999 and in Indonesia in May 2001. Production in Thailand ended in April 2003, and the Vios took over as Toyota's compact sedan for the region.
