The Story

Why the Sprinter Cielo matters

Sprinter Cielo was the five-door liftback of the sixth-generation Sprinter, launched in May 1987 as part of the E90 range and sold at Toyota Auto Store dealers in Japan. The range started with the 1.5-litre 5A-F at 85 PS, joined by the fuel-injected 5A-FE at 94 PS and, from the 1989 update, the 5A-FHE at 105 PS in the Xs grade. At the top was the GT, with the 1.6-litre twin-cam 4A-GE, which produced 120 PS at launch and 140 PS after the 1989 update. Manual and automatic gearboxes were offered. Production ended in 1991 with the E100 changeover, and the E100 Sprinter had no Cielo liftback in Japan.
