STORY
Trueno was the sporting coupe half of the Sprinter line, sold in Japan through the Toyota Auto Store; Toyota's own recycling-fee schedule traces the name back to the TE20 series of 1972. The car that carries it as a lineage entry of its own arrived on 12 May 1983: the Sprinter sedan switched to front drive, while the AE86 Trueno kept rear drive, a 1,587 cc 4A-GEU twin cam and retractable headlamps, the fixed lamps of its sister Corolla Levin being the clearest difference between them. Front drive came with the AE92 of 15 May 1987, which offered a supercharged 4A-GZE of 145 PS, lifted to 165 PS in May 1989. The AE101 of 12 June 1991 gave up the pop-up lamps, and the AE111 of 15 May 1995 traded the blower for a naturally aspirated five-valve 4A-GE. Toyota ended Trueno production in August 2000 as the coupe market shrank.
