Starlet 1.5 Diesel (1N, NP70)

P70 · 1984–1989FWD

Diesel power in a Starlet came from the 1.45-litre 1N engine, fitted to this NP70 hatchback sold in Japan from 1984 to 1989. It drove the front wheels through a manual gearbox. The 1N was a naturally aspirated four-cylinder aimed at buyers who put running costs first, and it was also used in the NP76V van.

STORY

The Starlet name appeared in 1973 on a small Toyota coupé and became a standalone range with the KP60 in February 1978. The P70 of October 1984 was the first Starlet with front-wheel drive. The EP82 GT Turbo of the early 1990s carried a turbocharged 1.3-litre four rated at 135 PS and was not offered in the UK. The P90 went on sale in Japan on 6 January 1996 as the basic Reflet and the sportier Glanza: the Glanza V kept the 135 PS turbo engine, the Glanza S used an 85 PS version without a turbo. Production ended in 1999, when the Vitz took over after about 26 years under the Starlet name.
